چکیده

Moving walkways (MW) have been imagined as a possible means of transport since the late 19 century, and this system has fascinated urban planners and engineers ever since. Contrary to what has been imagined, moving walkways are only used in transportation hub corridors, and not as a main transport mode in city centers. Today however, MWs are receiving increasing attention as a possible solution to congestion and pollution, as well as a catalyst for soft mobility. This paper explores the role of moving walkways as a transport system. We review historical MWs, current installations and future possibilities, using different perspectives, from geography to urban planning to transport engineering. We discuss the way in which MWs influence how people inhabit the urban space, and we review this system in the context of history of urban planning. Then, we describe a technological development called accelerating moving walkways (AMW), i.e. MWs able to reach a higher speed than traditional ones. We develop an optimization framework to design a network of AMWs, and we apply it to a real case study. The results of the network design are a reference useful to discuss the feasibility of the system starting from an engineering perspective. We conclude that the use of MWs can facilitate the flexibility and spontaneity typical of pedestrian movements, and this system could be integrated in the mix of urban transport modes in city centers.

Network design of a transport system based on accelerating moving walkways

Pollution, congestion and urbanistic considerations are leading to a change in the use of private vehicles in dense city centers. More frequently, the last-mile is covered with systems such as public transport, car sharing and bike sharing as well as an increase in walking and cycling. Following this trend, we assume a hypothetical scenario where the use of private cars is strongly limited in d...

Airport Terminal Corridors

This paper explores the use of pedestrian conveyor systems, otherwise known as moving walkways, in long public corridors such as those found in major commercial airports. The investigation includes a brief comparison of moving walkways with other primary modes of airport terminal passenger transportation and an empirical study of the use of moving walkways through analysis of passenger conveyor...

سنجش کیفیت منظر مسیرهای پیاده با استفاده از تکنیک یادداشت‌برداری و تحلیل عناصر بصری منظر (نمونه موردی: بافت تاریخی هارونیه اصفهان)

Abstract Old and historical contexts always consider as the major and historical and cultural heritage of cities. Nowadays the role of urban landscape in historical contexts and pedestrian paths is greatly considered by the researchers in urban landscaping, designing and planning. Urban landscape is cultural capitals of the cities and pedestrians are quite interested in it. The rate of effec...

A Novel Method for Travel System Patterns

Due to population growth in urban areas, especially in the capital cities in developing countries, the use of private vehicles are increasing, leading to many problems such as congestion, pollution, noise, long travel time, high travel cost and more side effects. In such circumstances government policy would encourage people to use public transportation. In the meantime, employing the Intellige...

Ecological and Economic Principles to Improve the Route Network of Urban Transport

The transport system of many Ukrainian cities does not meet the EU standards and requirements. There is a need to improve urban transport networks, to use transport potential efficiently on the basis of environmental logistics and to improve environmental safety as one of the principles of sustainable transport development. The systems model to create an ecologically safe logistics system of pu...
